I've tried warm milk before bedtime, and all I get are angry clowns at a ghetto carnival.

Why do you suppose the angel/demon/bird/parasite host/old man becomes "familiar" to the people? What is Marquez saying about humans' ability to "grow tired and bored" of a situation?

Humans are always trying to look for something, always trying to search for a meaning in this life, and on the way they meet distractors that for the time being occupy their time. However with time they grow tired with the familiar and want to search for the unknown. It is much like that monster in your closet that you are scared of as a child but then one day you notice its just a piece of clothing and than the next your going to sleep you are no longer scared or more so entertained, because thats all that obstacles do is entertain and once you have overcome that obstacle or have become too familiar you grow bored and move on.
